Meet the Second Season's Host: Ece Erder
Second season of Global Citizen Diaries(GCD) podcast is hosted by Ece Erder. Ece Erder is a 2nd year Master of Science student in the Comparative Medicine and Integrative Biology Program from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University. She moved to Michigan in 2016 for college from Istanbul Turkey, and since then received her BS in Cellular and Developmental Neuroscience, Post Baccalaureate Certification in Medical Neuroscience, and is finishing her thesis now for her MS.
As a host for the second season of Global Citizen Diaries(GCD) podcast , Ece believes in giving people space to express themselves freely. Her previous experiences, as well as these new experiences with GCD, have been eye opening, not only for other people’s perspective on important matters but also solutions to these important matters that we all deal with one way or another. Especially in recent GCD interviews, one of her favorite things is that while the discussion focuses on globalization, it always ties back to COVID-19 pandemic, and this happens regardless of the importance of people’s backgrounds or the side they felt belonged to.
“In reality, we all were/are affected by the pandemic, and we all have ideas on how it could have been handled better,” Ece notes. “Giving people the space to express their concerns, share their mental maps on the ways of processing, and how they have been taking care of themselves, while also allowing them to ask me questions and pick my brains is my favorite part.”
All of the interviews she ends up having or giving always result in a better understanding of the people and directly the world that we all live in. Ece hopes to give people the space to share their perspectives so that we can be more mindful and supportive of those we share this reality with.
To align with the documentary style of the Global Citizen Diaries, Ece’s interview questions aren't as structured and set. “It kind of flows with the conversation,” Ece says.
At the beginning of each episode, Ece always tries to let the guests introduce themselves and tell the audience how they (the guest and the host) already know each other. Ece believes that letting the listeners know that the host and the guest are not strangers will allow the audience to have some expectations for the depth of the conversations they might hear in the episode.
In each episode, Ece’s final question is always how have they been taking care of themselves through these hard times, which she does for many reasons. “First, by asking this question, I want to let my guests know I am proud of them for taking time for themselves,” Ece says. “Second, for listeners that might be experiencing similar feelings, it might be beneficial to hear about others' strategies for self-care in this difficult time. I think of this as a resource sharing opportunity.” For Ece, this question is also a way for being an advocate for students on campus. “Most importantly, by asking this question, I also want to know if my guests need any help or support so that I can advocate for them,” Ece explains.
Ece has been a mentor for many programs. She thinks everyone needs support academically, mentally, and emotionally. She believes that everyone and everything is connected in this world, so she really enjoys talking with people and making connections with them in different ways. “I can’t stop myself from giving and loving,” Ece says.
